Kitchen Remodel, Madison, WI
Posted in Kitchens, Remodeling, Windows on November 12, 2009 by freycon
Our November Client of the Month is Brian and Susan Anderson. They were referred to us by one of our very satisfied past clients, Susan Fenn! Brian and Susan had several home improvement projects in mind when they first contacted Frey Construction. The two main ones were finishing off their basement for additional bedroom space and a kitchen remodel. Both of these projects stemmed from the fact that they have a very large and busy family and their current space was no longer fitting their needs! So, the first priority was adding additional bedrooms and a bathroom in the basement for 2 of their older kids. Secondly, the Anderson’s wondered if it was possible to eliminate a wall in order to open up their kitchen – common gathering area for family and all their friends. During that first consultation, other items were also added to the wish list – a new deck, garage door and a couple of windows, just to name a few!
Scott & Jenn went to work, coming up with a basement and kitchen plan that the Anderson’s would love. Once the designs were finalized, they went through and priced out all of the projects that had been discussed in an open book, ala carte’ fashion – that way they could go back through and prioritize projects that best fit their budget. In the end, the remodel included all of the work originally discussed and then some! We finished off 2 bedrooms in the basement, each complete with egress windows.
The kitchen expansion was an amazing success, not only beautiful to look at, but much more functional, as previously the Anderson’s could barely fit around one small kitchen table. Now, they have two islands, a window seat and an area for a large dining room table! As an added bonus, they can now walk from the kitchen area right out onto their brand new maintenance free deck! We didn’t stop there – we also updated tile and wood flooring throughout the rest of the house, replaced several windows, replaced the front door and updated several other doors, stairways and railings, as well as the installation of new gutters! Overall, it was a true pleasure to work with the Andersons and we are very happy to add them as a “client for life”!
We want to give you money for the holidays!

Moisture on your windows…
Posted in Insulation, Windows on October 13, 2009 by freyconCondensation on your windows is usually not the windows fault. Ever wonder why condensation forms on your windows—and what you can do to prevent it? Windows serve as visible areas for moisture to condense, warning you that there is too much moisture inside your home. What is Condensation? Condensation is the result of high humidity that produces a “fog” once it hits a colder surface. The humidity is caused by excess water vapor in the home. This is commonly seen in a foggy mirror after a hot shower. Condensation usually occurs first on windows because glass surfaces have the lowest temperature of any of the interior surfaces in the home. What causes condensation on windows? Whenever there is excess humidity in a home, it manifests itself in the form of condensation on the coldest area of a wall, which is normally the windows. The warmer the air, the more moisture it will retain, so when air in your home comes in contact with the colder glass surface, it is subsequently cooled and moisture is released in the form of condensation on the glass. All homes have a certain level of moisture due to household activities. Activities such as cooking, laundry and dish washing can add up to five pounds of water vapor into the air daily! Other moisture-producing agents include plants, heating systems and humidifiers. Do windows cause condensation? No, condensation on windows is not the fault of the window. However, by replacing drafty windows and doors or installing a new roof or siding, you are reducing air flow in your home and making it tighter. Tighter homes actually retain more humidity. Seasonal changes, quick changes in temperature, reconstruction and remodeling can also add excess humidity temporarily into the air. Can I reduce the condensation on my windows? Yes. In order to reduce condensation, humidity must be controlled and air movement must be generated. As the exterior temperature drops, the humidity level needs to decrease if condensation is to be controlled. What steps can I take to reduce humidity in my home? The two main things you can do are to control sources of moisture and increase ventilation. To decrease or control excess humidity and condensation: Use exhaust fans in your kitchen, laundry and bathrooms. Run exhaust fans while the humidity-producing appliance is operating or the humidity-producing activity is going on, and let them run a while after the activities have ended. Vent gas burners, clothes dryers, etc. to the outdoors. Be sure that the ventilating louvers in your attic, basement or crawl spaces are open and amply sized. Open fireplace dampers to allow an escape route for moisture-laden air. Air out your house a few minutes each day. Because outside air usually contains less water vapor, it will “dilute” the humidity of inside air. If you have a furnace humidifier or other humidifying device in your home, be sure it is adjusted to produce the proper amount of humidity, or turn it off. The humidity produced elsewhere in your home may mean these devices are not needed at this time. Install ceiling fans to keep air circulating within your home. If troublesome condensation persists, contact us at 608.643.7914 and we’ll send a specialist out for a free, no-obligation inspection of your windows and ventilation.
October is National Kitchen and Bath Month
Posted in Uncategorized on October 7, 2009 by freyconIn October, thanks to U.S. and Canadian government incentives, there’s more reason than ever for homeowners to remodel their kitchens and bathrooms during National Kitchen & Bath Month. Inspired by the success of the “Cash for Clunkers” program in August, the U.S. Department of Energy will launch a “Cash for Appliances” program this fall, providing nearly $300 million in stimulus funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to consumers who purchase new energy-efficient kitchen appliances. In a statement announcing the plan, Energy Secretary Steven Chu said, “These rebates will help families make the transition to more efficient appliances, making purchases that will directly stimulate the economy and create jobs.” This new rebate program is in addition to a number of U.S. tax credits on energy-efficient products for homes introduced earlier this year. This includes many gas, oil, electric, and solar water heaters, which are reimbursed at 30 percent of their purchase price, up to $1,500. Many energy-efficient windows, skylights, exterior doors, insulation, and HVAC systems are also eligible for a 30 percent tax credit, up to $1,500 per home (this $1,500 limit is the total for all credits applied to the home across all categories of eligible products). Celebrated each October since its inception by the NKBA in 1982, National Kitchen & Bath Month is the ideal time of year for homeowners to remodel their kitchens and baths, after settling into the back-to-school routine, but before holiday preparations take place!
