Posted in Kitchens on January 29, 2010 by freyconBill and Johnna Monkemeyer’s kitchen remodel project turned out so great, we just had to share it! Bill and Johnna first discovered Frey Construction when we were working in their Madison neighborhood.
Bill had previously added on to his garage, which was “his project” so – it was only fair that Johnna received a turn at having a project done. So she chose to have her kitchen remodeled into her dream kitchen.
Bill and Johnna did a lot of the demolition of their old kitchen themselves – which is one of the great things about our remodeling design agreements – they allow the homeowners to be as involved as much or as little as they want! Once our remodeling crew came in, we focused on utilizing the space better to provide Bill and Johnna with more usuable space. We did this by moving the door leading to their garage to a new location – which created more space in their kitchen. We also removed half of the wall that was separating the living room and kitchen. By doing so, we created a more spacious and open areas in the kitchen, as well as the living room. From there, we installed their beautiful oak cabinets, corian solid surface countertops, as well as a built in china hutch. Their old vinyl flooring was replaced with ceramic tile – and it was laid in a hopscotch pattern – which adds dimension to the room and it is very eye-catching.
Bill and Johnna also had us finish off some work in their basement. We comlpeted a bathroom and recreational room, re-worked the electrical and updated their plumbing.
The Monkemeyer’s said that they really enjoyed having our Remodeling Project Foreman, Don Kleist, work for them – he was always willing to make any adjustments they requested, we well as all of our sub-contractors.
It was a great honor working with Bill and Johnna. We hope they enjoy their kitchen for many years to come!
2010: Don’t miss out on home improvement tax credits!
Posted in Coal Boilers, Doors, Energy Efficient, Insulation, Roofing, Siding, Tax Credits, Windows on January 28, 2010 by freyconIn early 2009, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act was enacted as part of a plan to stimulate the economy. The bill grants tax credits to homeowners who make specific home improvements during 2009 and 2010 that meet certain energy-efficiency guidelines.
If you made home improvements in 2009, make sure that you have what you need to claim the credits on your 2009 taxes. If you missed out in 2009, these credits still apply for 2010. Start planning now so that you can take advantage!
Here are some of the basics; for detailed information go to to energystar.gov/taxcredits.
- The eligible improvement must be placed in service or work must be completed between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2010. A maximum of $1,500 can be claimed for qualifying products. You must have a Manufacturer Certification Statement for the product in order to qualify. Save receipts and the Manufacturer Certification Statement; for new windows, keep the Energy Star label. Improvements must be made to your principal residence. However, certain products also qualify for second homes. Claim improvements made in 2009 on your 2009 taxes using IRS Tax Form 5695. Tax credits for windows, doors, insulation, roofs, HVAC, and non-solar water heaters are not available for new homes. Certain other improvements do qualify for new homes.
Items that are eligible for the tax credits include:
- Exterior windows, skylights, storm windows, and doors that have a U factor below 0.30 and a Solar Heat Gain Coefficient, or SHGC, of less than 0.30. Certain types of insulation – specific lifespan and warranty requirements apply Energy Star brand metal or asphalt roofing – specific lifespan and warranty requirements apply, Central air conditioning Furnaces – either natural gas or propane Heat pumps, Hot water boilers, Hot water heaters – either gas, oil, or propane Biomass stoves Photovoltaic solar panels Wind energy systems Residential fuel cells and micro-turbine systems
All qualifying products must meet certain energy-efficiency levels; thus, not all products qualify for the tax break. Only those with higher energy efficiency ratings are eligible, and these products typically cost more than standard products. Also remember that the $1,500 maximum (as a percentage up to 30% of the cost of the upgrade) is cumulative for ALL improvements.
If you’re thinking about making home improvements this year, the time is definitely now! Frey Construction can provide you with additional information on qualifying products and exceptions.

Going “Green” More Than Just a Fad
Posted in Energy Efficient, Go Green, Roofing on January 12, 2010 by freyconGreen really is “the new black.” Being environmentally conscious is trendy—and rightly so. It may be the best, most forward-thinking trend we’ve had in decades.
To some, “going green” is just a fad—green cleaning product here, a reusable grocery bag there. It’s hip and it’s new and soon it will be out with tomorrow’s non-recyclable trash. To most consumers, however, being green has become an irreversible way of life—a commitment to preserving our environment for future generations.
To those serious about being green, Metal Roofing may be of special interest to you. Metal Roofing saves energy year-round, decreases air-conditioning needs in the summer and heating in the winter, reducing both harmful greenhouse gas emissions and household electricity bills. Unlike traditional roofing materials such as asphalt, slate, clay or wood shingles, metal roofing is made from recycled materials, saving landfill space and the energy needed to convert raw materials into construction-grade metals. Its astounding durability is green as well since metal roofing needs far less repair than traditional roofing, significantly decreasing the need for replacement parts. Although metal roofing can last several lifetimes, green consumers can rest assured that should it ever be removed, it is 100 percent recyclable.
It’s true that the little things we do for our environment add up: recycling household items such as cans and bottles, choosing to walk or bike instead of driving, switching to energy-efficient light bulbs. Sometimes, however, one decision—such as the choice to install metal roofing—can make a huge impact on the planet. An investment in metal roofing is an investment in our environment. And that’s truly green.
